Hair Loss

About Hair Loss

What is it?

The average human head has more than 100,000 healthy hairs, and many people have well over 150,000. Typically, you may lose around 50-100 of these hairs every day, which isn’t noticeable. However, once you start to lose well over 100 individual hairs daily, it can start to affect your appearance. Both men and women are affected by hair loss but in different ways. For example, while it’s common for men to have a noticeable loss on their hairline or crown, women tend to experience thinning hair in a more random, widespread pattern. Women also usually have localized loss because of repeated hair trauma, such as from hair being pulled tightly back in a ponytail or bun.

What causes it?

There are various reasons contributing to this. The most common causes include genetics, frequent stress, poor nutrition, certain medications, emotional issues, and trauma or injury.

Common treatments

The hair loss and skin experts at SkinScience MD have the experience and knowledge to provide you with solutions that stabilize your hair and help stimulate growth. Among these options are Minoxidil, an over-the-counter topical lotion that we also offer in prescription strength; Finasteride, an oral medication; and Spironolactone, another oral medication.

Cosmetic Injections

October 24, 2024 by michaelboache

Cosmetic injections, sometimes called cosmetic fillers, are dermatological treatments for aging skin.

Cosmetic injections are used by dermatologists to help patients achieve a more youthful appearance. As skin ages, it begins to show signs of aging like wrinkles and sagging.

These treatments plump up the skin so wrinkles disappear and sagging diminishes or becomes less noticeable. These injections do not lead to permanent results but repeat treatments are safe. This way, anyone can achieve the more youthful appearance that they desire.

SkinScience MD offers several cosmetic injection treatments, including Botox®, Juvederm®, Restylane®, and Dysport®.

What are They Used For?

The primary purpose of cosmetic injections is to enhance the appearance of older skin. For this reason, these are most often done on the face; however, they can also be done on other areas of the body, including the hands. In fact, Botox is a cosmetic injection that is also used to combat excessively sweaty palms.

Most often, though, cosmetic injections are used to:

  • Soften facial creases
  • Erase fine lines and wrinkles
  • Plump up thinning skin
  • Improve the appearance of facial scars
  • Plump lips
  • Enhance facial contours

Types of Injections

Cosmetic injections are frequently referred to by their brand name. For instance, many of the types of cosmetic injections listed here are actually brand names that contain very similar ingredients. They include:

  • Jeuveau
  • Juvederm
  • Botox
  • Sculptra
  • Radiesse
  • Kybella
  • Restylane
  • Dysport
  • RHA
  • Versa

Cosmetic injections are FDA-approved and considered safe for most individuals; however, certain side effects may occur with some cosmetic injection formulations.

If you have side effects with one type of cosmetic injection, it doesn’t mean you and your dermatologist can’t use another type of cosmetic injection. Talk to your dermatologist at SkinScience MD to determine if one type of filler may be more suitable for your needs than another.

Skin Resurfacing

What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

At SkinScience by Cynthia Price, MD we offer advanced laser skin resurfacing treatments designed to restore smoother, clearer, and more youthful-looking skin. These treatments address a wide range of concerns including fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, acne scars, uneven tone, and rough texture. By removing damaged outer layers of skin and stimulating collagen renewal, resurfacing treatments can dramatically enhance overall skin quality and radiance.

How Skin Resurfacing Works

Skin resurfacing can be performed using advanced technologies such as laser treatments, radiofrequency, or other energy-based devices that precisely target damaged skin layers. These treatments encourage natural healing while promoting collagen and elastin production. Depending on the method chosen, resurfacing may be gentle and require little downtime or deeper for more transformative results. Some patients may notice improvements after a single session, while a series of treatments provides optimal, long-lasting outcomes.

Who is a Good Candidate?

Skin resurfacing is ideal for patients who wish to correct visible signs of aging, smooth acne scarring, reduce sun damage, or brighten dull complexions. The treatment is well suited for individuals seeking non-surgical options that produce noticeable improvements in skin quality. During your consultation, Dr. Cynthia Price will evaluate your skin type, concerns, and goals to recommend the most effective resurfacing approach tailored specifically for you.
